Brian’s Good News 1 November

The Aberdeen Art Gallery is to open its doors to the public on Monday 4 November. The gallery has been closed since 2015 and has been under going a  £ 34.6 million refurbishment.  The amount of display space has increased gallery viewing spaces to 19 and the amount of artwork increased to 1080 pieces. There is also a Hall of Remembrance which has been revamped. Everyone’s names written in Aberdeen’s Book of Remembrance will scroll across the Hall. A new top floor offers vistas across the City. Visitors can enjoy free admission. 

A North East woman Jennifer Gow has been awarded an MBE for making special teddy bears for children undergoing complex surgery. The project began when Jennifer’s daughter Eilidh who had a congenital bowel condition and stoma surgery at the age of 3 was gifted a bear with a button sewn on. Buttony Bears now has a project team of 5 who liaise with families and design the toys. Jennifer has raised more than £130,000 for local charities was very surprised to be getting an MBE. A new music competition has been launched – Sound Of The North East. The contest is open to practicing musicians with a connection to Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire to create something special to align with the region’s renewed enthusiasm with the arts. A runner who has less than 5 years to live has been short listed for Jogscotland leader of the year award for her work with The Newmachar Running Group.  Marie Dobson was told this year that secondary breast cancer has spread to her ribs,spine, chest and hips is terminal. Marie set up a fun run Run4Marie which attracted more than 200 people and raised over £3000 for the Coppafeel Charity (breast cancer charity)  Her determination and resolve are inspiring.
